Colors on the web are usually described in one of three formats: HEX (a 6-digit hexadecimal value like #4b9fe0), RGB (red, green and blue channels from 0-255), and HSL (hue, saturation and lightness), which is often more intuitive to reason about — e.g. lowering lightness always darkens a color without shifting its hue.

Pick a color or type a hex value to see it converted to all three formats instantly, entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?

HEX and RGB both describe a color by its red/green/blue channel values (HEX in hexadecimal, RGB in decimal); HSL instead describes hue, saturation and lightness, which is often more intuitive for adjusting a color by eye.

Does this support alpha/transparency?

Yes — 8-digit HEX (#RRGGBBAA), rgba() and hsla() are all supported for colors with an alpha channel.

Why do two different HEX codes look like the same color?

Very similar RGB values can be visually indistinguishable to the human eye, especially at low saturation or extreme lightness, even though they are technically different colors.
