Base64 vs URL Encoding

Learn the difference between Base64 and URL percent-encoding, and which one to use for data, query strings and URLs.

Base64 and URL encoding are both ways to make data safe for transmission, but they solve different problems. Mixing them up produces broken URLs or bloated data.

Base64 Encoder

  • Represents arbitrary binary data as printable ASCII, growing it by about 33%.
  • Used to embed binary data in JSON, URLs and email, not to encode URLs themselves.
  • Provides no confidentiality — it is a representation, not encryption.

URL Encoder

  • Escapes reserved characters in a URL so they are interpreted literally, not as syntax.
  • encodeURIComponent-style percent-encoding is meant for a single query parameter value.
  • A space becomes %20, and non-ASCII characters are UTF-8 encoded then percent-encoded.

Verdict

Use URL encoding to make a URL or query parameter safe, and Base64 when you need to embed binary data as text — including Base64 inside a URL-safe wrapper when needed.
